Authenticator
An authenticator app secures your account with a second factor: something you have, beside the password you know. A stolen password on its own is then not enough to get in.
Administrator tasks always ask for a second factor. That is what keeps one stolen login from reaching the data of everyone else.
Any authenticator app works, including one that is not listed here. A few to choose from:
- Microsoft Authenticator Microsoft: download Microsoft Authenticator
- Google Authenticator Google: get verification codes with Google Authenticator
- Apple Passwords, built into iPhone, iPad and Mac Apple: automatically fill in one-time verification codes
- Ente Auth, open source and also available on a computer Ente Auth
- 1Password, if you already keep your passwords there 1Password: use it as an authenticator
Add this site to your app by scanning its QR code, or by typing the setup key in by hand. Both ways are below.
Scanning is the easier of the two, and it is not available when the app doing the scanning is on the phone showing the code.
By scanning the QR code
- Open the setup page: Add an authenticator
- In your app, press Add, or the plus button.
- Scan the QR code shown on the setup page. On an Apple device you can also press and hold the QR code, or right-click it on a computer, and choose Set Up Verification Code.
- Type the six-digit code your app now shows into the field on the setup page.
- Press Verify.
- That is it. Your account asks for a code from now on.
By typing the key in
- Open the setup page: Add an authenticator
- In your app, press Add, or the plus button.
- Type the setup key from the setup page into your app. Name the entry after your club, so you recognise it later.
- Type the six-digit code your app now shows into the field on the setup page.
- Press Verify.
- That is it. Your account asks for a code from now on.
Official instructions
When you are asked for a code:
- Open your authenticator app.
- Copy the six-digit code under the entry for your club.
- Type or paste it into the field on the page asking for it.
- Press Confirm.
- You are through. For a while afterwards you are not asked again.
Lost the phone, or the codes with it? Most authenticator apps have a recovery route of their own, tied to the account you set the app up with. Look that up for the app you used first.
When there is no way back in, ask an administrator of your club to remove the authenticator from your account, so you can set a new one up.
